If a lack of flexibility exists in the upper body the ability to execute an efficient golf swing will be hampered.
One such area of the upper body requiring flexibility is the shoulder joint. This joint from anatomical perspective is considered a ball and socket joint. As a result this joint has a large amount of mobility within it. The mobility within this joint allows for golfer to complete a full shoulder turn, execute a downswing into impact, and complete a follow through.
If restrictions exist in the shoulder capsule compensations will occur in the golf swing. First and foremost “tightness” in this joint will cause difficulties at address position. Typically you will find golfers with shoulder restrictions unable to place the body in the correct set-up position and they will have a tendency to be in what is termed a “c-posture” where the shoulders are rounded forwarded.
In addition to problems with the address position, shoulder restrictions restrict ranges of motion backswing, create difficulty in squaring the clubface, cause an inability to release the club after impact, and impede the follow through. All of which will lead to difficulties with the golf swing.
To correct joint restrictions in the shoulder capsule we must first look at the muscles surrounding the joint. This would include the superficial muscles of the shoulder such as the deltoids, the rotator cuff, and muscles of the upper back. These are the muscles responsible for facilitating movement in the shoulder joint. In addition if any of these muscles found within these muscle groups are “tight” or “weak” shoulder mobility will be affected.
To correct such problems, increase shoulder mobility, and improve your golf swing. The addition of stretching and strengthening exercises for will be of great benefit. These types of exercises will focus on creating flexibility in the muscles that are commonly “tight” in the shoulder capsule, and develop strength in the ones that are “weak”.
Keep in mind the golf swing is “total body athletic action” requiring strength and flexibility from all the muscles of the body. The process by which we can improve these components of the golf swing is through a golf fitness program which incorporate golf exercises in the form of flexibility training.

Golf fitness exercises in the form of weight training can benefit the golf swing. The professional golfer utilizes golf exercises in the form of weight training to improve the golf swing. Unfortunately an information gap exists for the amateur player on what are the proper weight training exercises and techniques to utilize for the sport of golf. All to often an amateur will utilize a general fitness or football orientated weight-training program to improve their golf game. The utilization of such programs may provide some benefit to the amateur golfer and their game, but these are not the ideal weight training programs to utilize for golf.
Golf as with any sport, requires the athlete to place the body in specific positions, execute certain functional movements, and develop specific forces. For example; A lineman in football must place themselves in a 3-point stance, extend forcefully from this position into their opponent, and attempt to move an individual weighing anywhere from 250-300 lbs. in a specific direction. The physical requirements to execute this set of athletic movements are quite different than athletic actions involved in the golf swing. As a result the training of a lineman for football is very different than fitness training for a golfer.
This is the reason why a football based or general fitness program are not the ideal programs to utilize for the sport of golf. The key component of weight training for golf is the following; Train the body to the anatomical positions, ranges of motion, and physical requirements of the sport. This will create a “transfer of training” effect of the weight-training program onto the actual golf swing.
The golf swing requires you to maintain a set spine angle, rotate around this fixed spine angle, and generate power during the swing. The weight training exercises utilized for golf should focus upon these three components of the swing.
In order to efficiently execute these actions, certain levels of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power are required. Weight training exercises can assist in the development of these physical parameters for the golf swing. Flexibility and balance training do not typically utilize external resistance (i.e. dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls). But the components of muscular strength, endurance, and power will absolutely utilize resistance training.
Common weight training exercises utilized in a golf fitness program entail rotation, the development of core strength, and endurance. A few exercises I commonly utilize in this section of my golf fitness programs are Medicine Ball Rotations, Rotational Dumbbell Lunges, Alternating Cable Chest Presses, and Single Arm Lat Pull Downs. Again these are only a few exercises that can be utilized in such a program.
Remember, training for the sport of golf is different than training for football or general wellness. The sport of golf requires you to train to the positions, requirements, and physical outputs of the sport. If you keep this principle in mind when choosing the strength training exercises in your program, the benefits will show in your golf swing and on the course. How do golf and fitness go together? Why do I need golf fitness training? What difference would a golf fitness program make to my golf game?
I can tell you all about that from what I have seen with my friend and golfing buddy, Dooley Duffer.
Dooley had been away from the game for some years. His career and family took priority over his time and golf, although he loved it, it just would not fit into his schedule. As he advanced in his career he became less physically active. He even moved to a management position so time in the office was nothing like the work he had been doing.
His body began to show his change in lifestyle. Don’t tell him I told you this, but his middle seemed to grow faster than his salary. Bet you know how that story goes, huh?
He had only played very occasionally during that time. So I don’t think he realized how much being out of shape affected his golf swing performance.
Then Dooley changed companies and began to play golf regularly again thanks to his new boss who had recently taken up the game. With his kids grown Dooley now had more time to devote to golf and it only took one round back on the course to re-ignite the passion which had burned so brightly in days gone by.
As he began to play more often his physical limitations became a more and more of an issue. He struggled at times to finish a round; scores would escalate due to inconsistent swings, loss of concentration and general fatigue. He would even huff and puff when walking up hills in spite of always riding a cart. I can remember having to wait for him to catch his breath before he could putt on elevated greens. No chance he could walk when he played.

Then over a few weeks I began to notice improvement in Dooley’s game. Less and less of the struggles I had noticed before and more successful golf shots, better concentration and less fatigue. He even began saying he wanted to play an extra 9 holes!
You see, conditioning is critical to your overall golf performance. And poor physical conditioning will certainly ruin your golf performance. Just ask Dooley about that.
What was Dooley’s secret? Had he hired a golf fitness trainer? Did he use golf fitness videos? What had he done to improve his fitness for golf and his golf handicap?

The core incorporates all the muscles of the front, sides, and back of the body. Muscles groups found within the core are the glutes, abdominals, obliques, and hamstrings.
Why does a golf fitness specific training program focus upon the core?
Simply because the majority of movements of the golf swing involve the musculature of the core, and for this reason these muscles need to be flexible, strong, and power.
Knowing the importance of the core relative to the golf swing, the next question to ask is how can we increase club head speed with training the core?
Club head speed in terms of the body is measured as power. Increasing the power outputs of the core will assist in improving your club head speed. Assuming you have developed the required levels of flexibility, strength, and endurance within the core to simply execute the biomechanics of the golf swing efficiently. The addition of power training exercises will assist in improving the power outputs for the golf swing.
These types of exercises will focus on creating increased force outputs by the core in a rotational movement pattern. Exercises often found in this section of a core program for golf are medicine ball side throws, medicine ball reverse throws, jump squats, and medicine ball overhead throws. All of these exercises develop the power outputs of the core over time if performed on a consistent basis.
Remember the importance of golf fitness exercises, golf exercises, and golf training programs for increasing club head speed. Increased ball speed is contingent upon both your swing mechanics and body. Improvement in both of these areas is required if the desire is to increase the distance of your drives. Utilize golf exercises to train the aformentioned areas of the body within a golf fitness program. Secondly, work on the actual mechanics of the golf swing through proper golf instruction and practice.

A quality golf fitness program should focus on strengthening all parts of the body, because the whole body works together in the golf swing.
If you are new to the strength training side of golf, or just strength training in general, I would suggest starting out with machine exercises instead of free weights. Machine exercises can be performed correctly faster, and they provide you with less risk of injury. After you feel comfortable with the machine exercises, move on to free weights. A combination of machine exercises, and free weights will you give you a well rounded routine, that will show you improvement in your golf game, and your golf course fitness.
Now as you have become a stronger and more flexible golfer you will be able to generate more power with less effort in your golf swing. And that is one secret to a more consistent golf game. As you are able to produce more power without forcing the power, you are able to repeat your golf swing every shot, which in turn will give you longer, and straighter shots. This same rule applies to a baseball pitcher, who must repeat his delivery every pitch to be successful. So take a few minutes out of your day today, and start some simple golf stretching exercises, then move on to increasing your strength, distance, and your overall golf course fitness.
